What is the P.A.V.

The Pontifical Academy for Life, founded by Pope John Paul II, exists for the promotion and defense of human life, especially regarding bioethics as it regards Christian morality. Its statute was defined by the motu proprio Vitae Mysterium of Pope John Paul II on 11 February 1994.

Prof. Adriano Bompiani passed away

Professor Adrian Bompiani, Emeritus Member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, passed away on June 18th at the age of 90. One of the Original Members of the Academy for Life, Professor Bompiani was nominated on May 3rd, 1994.

Changing of the Guard on the Directive Council

The Holy Father appointed Pontifical Academy for Life Member, Dr. Adriano Pessina, as a Member of the Directive Council.

Pontifical Academy mourns the passing of Dr. Pellegrino

Dr. Edmund D. Pellegrino, Emeritus Member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, 11th President of the Catholic University of America and senior scholar at Georgetown's Kennedy Institute of Bioethics passed away on June 13, 2013 at the age of 92.

The ‘One of Us’ campaign is seeking to gain 1 million signatures as part of a European Citizen Initiative. If organizers of the campaign achieve their goal the European Parliament is duty-bound to schedule a debate on the issue.

International Congress on Bioethics in Cuba

On May 16th - 18th 2013, the 1st International Congress on Bioethics organised by the Juan Pablo II Center took place in Havana, Cuba - with participation of several Pontifical Academy for Life members.
